Russian is spoken by about 170 million people, making it one of the world's major languages. Russian is one of the official languages of the United Nations.
Russian is a highly inflected language. Grammatical differences are shown by prefixes, suffixes, and word changes
Russian has no article (the, a, an).
The verb "to be" is not expressed in the present tense (am, is, are).
Russian word order is largely free, with order being used for emphasis.
Russian spelling is much more consistent than in English. Russian makes it easier to predict the sound of a word from its written form (but not the stress accent).
Many Russian and English words are the same or similar.
