How to Learn English - ESL

English is considered to be the most useful language at present. It is the language of commerce and business, and is used internationally.

Spoken English and written English are two different, but related languages. Both are learned at the same time, however. This allows speakers to resolve ambiguity by referring to the written form of a word (spell that please!).

The concept of "parts of speech" (verb, noun, etc) is obscure in Spoken English and becoming extinct. The listener must determine meaning from the context of the statement, and by elaborate supposition.

Written English represents the spoken language of centuries long past. Much less ambiguous than the spoken form, written English is the vehicle for an extensive literature spanning centuries.

There are 40 diferent sounds in English (some say 45) and only 26 letters in the alphabet. There are 1120 different letters and letter combinations that can be used to misrepresent these 40 different sounds. Who said that?
An example: buy, by, light, lie, I, eye.
Another: bough, cough, enough, tough, rough, dough, though, thorough, through, plough, hiccough.
Another: womb, comb, bomb.
Another: move, glove, dove, drove.
Another: floor, door, boor, moor, book, roof, stood, cook, kook, boot, hoot, nook, wool
Another: promise, compromise

Although English is maddening in its refusal to let go of its irrationality, the learner can find English everywhere and by frequent use and practice master its difficulties.

Quite good. Shows idioms by subject matter, the most natural way for learning them and using them with meaning.
